Teenagers’ sense of self is not yet stable and can be reliant for some time on external reinforcements like peer approval. In the short term, being ignored on Facebook or Instagram reinforce feelings of invisibility and low self-worth.

Girls take less credit for their successes than boys. Freedom from self-denigration is a powerful protector against stress-related debilitation. Girls need to feel inter-personally effective by evoking a sought-for response in another person, starting with their parents.
