Cathi Cohen, LCSW, CGP – In Step Director
Cathi Cohen, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Certified Group Psychotherapist, has worked with children, adolescents, and adults in a clinical setting since 1984. Early in her career as a social worker, Cathi recognized the power of treating relationship problems through group therapy. It was this interest and expertise that led her to create the Stepping Stones Social Skills Group Therapy Program in 1990. The success of this program led to the formation in 1995 of In Step, a comprehensive mental health practice. Cathi is the author of Raise Your Child’s Social IQ: Stepping Stones to People Skills for Kids, and has become a leading expert in the field of social skills training with children. She has since then completed two more books, Stepping Stones to Building Friendships: A Guide for Camp Counselors, and Outnumbered, Not Outsmarted: An A to Z Guide for Working with Kids and Teens in Groups. In addition to writing numerous articles and conducting regular workshops for parents, educators, and mental health professionals, Cathi has appeared on radio and television programs about the mental health needs of children and their families. Cathi graduated from Tufts University before receiving her M.S. degree from Columbia University School of Social Work.

Robert Axelrod, LCSW     Fairfax, Extension #74
Robert E. Axelrod, a licensed clinical social worker since 1990, earned his Bachelors degree in Psychology from The American University in Washington DC, and his Masters in Social Work from Tulane University. As a social worker for Fairfax county for twenty-nine years, he worked for the juvenile courts, then at Northwest Center for Community Mental Health and more recently with the public school system. Ann Barrett, a Licensed Professional Counselor, received her undergraduate degree from the University of Mary Washington and her graduate degree from The George Washington University. She began her professional career at Caliber/ICF Consulting, providing services and support on a variety of child welfare initiatives. As a Licensed School Psychologist Dale has a variety of experiences with children ranging in age from 2 to 18 years. Her career in the local public school systems has given her experience conducting psychoeducational assessments, consulting with parents and school staff, and participating as a knowledgeable member of special education committees. Erika Carlson, MSW, Supervisee in Social Work  Fairfax, Extension #34
Erika received her Bachelors degree in Psychology from Virginia Tech and later earned her Master’s in Social Work from Virginia Commonwealth University. During her graduate studies, Erika provided support services and case management to individuals and their families in transitional housing programs.  In addition, she worked with individuals with severe mental illnesses and co-occurring disabilities in a residential setting. Karen received her undergraduate degree from Marquette University and her MSW from RadfordUniversity.  She has over 12 years of experience working with children and families.  Much of Karen’s experience has been in the child welfare system working with children in foster care, and foster and adoptive families.  Most recently, Karen managed a grant-funded program providing post-adoption family preservation services.  Karen has experience working with individuals, groups and families.  Read more

Rachel Cherian, LCSW     Fairfax, Extension #20
Rachel received her M.S. Degree in social work from Columbia University in New York. Prior to returning to graduate school, Rachel worked as a preschool teacher for eight years. She offers sixteen years of experience working with children and families. Keith K. Ewell, Ph.D.     Fairfax, Extension #20
Dr. Ewell received his Bachelor of Arts from Loyola University Maryland and his Master’s and Ph.D. from the University of Miami in Florida. While in college, Dr. Ewell volunteered, and then later became a substitute teacher at the Children’s Guild, a school for children and adolescents with emotional, behavioral and mental disorders, in Baltimore, Maryland. His time at the Children’s Guild solidified his passion for the field of psychology.Dr. Ewell spent time doing political work at the University of Florida as the Director for an inpatient unit for adolescents with poorly controlled diabetes, which was operated through the Department of Pediatrics and Psychiatry. Carrie Field is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker in DC and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in VA.  She graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University with her Bachelor in Social Work and attended Catholic University of America for her Master in Social Work.  Carrie is certified in Play Therapy through NIRE.  Carrie has experience working with in the foster care system and in the DC school system.  Carrie has worked with children, families, and adolescents providing individual and group therapy, parenting classes, case management, and educational services.   Read more

Beverly Morrison is a licensed clinical social worker and In Step’s Group Therapy Coordinator. She received her master’s degree from Catholic University in Washington DC. Beverly has worked with In Step since 2000 and she has evaluated and helped hundreds of children, parents, couples and families cope with a variety of issues including depression, stress and anxiety, relationship problems, and social communication delays. Beverly has a special fondness for working with children and teens in group therapy. Read more

Kelly received her B.A. from Pennsylvania State University and her MA in Education and Human Development from George Washington University. For the past seven years, Kelly has worked as a school counselor for Fairfax County Public Schools. Additionally, Kelly is a licensed professional counselor who provides a wide range of services to youth, families, and children in a variety of settings. Danielle Nicholson received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Virginia and her Master of Social Work degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. She has been a Licensed Clinical Social Worker since 2006. Danielle has worked in Fairfax County for over 17 years and for the past six years as a school social worker with FCPS. Danielle has applied her skills and talents as a clinician at a school for adolescents with emotional disabilities and autism. Mary Shuffleton, LPC, MA     Fairfax, Extension #29
Mary received her undergraduate degree at the University of Massachusetts and her Master’s in Counseling Psychology at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. During her graduate training, Mary found her passion while working with children and families. While still in Spokane, she also became certified in school counseling and worked as a therapist in a partnership program between a mental health agency and a school system. Mary’s prior professional experience included working at a brain injury rehabilitation facility where she was encouraged to pursue her graduate degree in counseling. Read more

Sybille Swanson, MS, Ed.D     Fairfax, Extension #20
Sybille earned her Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology from the University of East London and her post-Master’s Degree from City University in London, England.  She is an associate fellow with the British Psychological Society and currently a doctoral candidate in Counseling Psychology at Argosy University.  Sybille provided assessments and therapeutic interventions as a counseling psychologist for the National Health Service in the U.K. for 8 years.  She currently splits her time between Children’s National Medical Center in Washington D.C. where she performs psychological assessments, and In Step where she co-facilitates groups and provides individual and family counseling. Sharon Williams, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, received her Bachelor’s degree in psychology from Bates College in Maine, and her graduate degree from the University of Maryland School of Social Work. She has been in practice since 1997.
